Spring Semester 2025: NCVRW Student Showcase Entries Wanted

Posted November 18, 2024

It’s the perfect time for faculty to begin thinking about contributing to DMACC’s 2nd Annual National Crime Victims’ Rights Week (NCVRW) Student Showcase, to be held on April 8th and 9th, at Building 5 Conference Center, Ankeny Campus!

The DMACC NCVRW Student Showcase is one of many activities planned to honor and support victims and survivors of crime, victim services agencies, non-profits, and community groups, for the national annual observance for NCVRW. This year, the NCVRW theme is Connecting < KINSHIP > Healing, which is a call-to-action to recognize that shared humanity should be at the center of supporting all survivors and victims of crime.

The DMACC 2025 NCVRW ad hoc committee invites all faculty to consider reimagining one course activity in order to provide students with a way to connect and contribute to the Showcase in observance of Crime Victims’ Rights Week.

Last year, DMACC students in criminal justice, psychology, and sociology classes completed course assignments and displayed their work in  Ankeny’s Bldg. 5 Student Showcase and also at the Urban Campus. Media campaigns (think tri-fold poster displays or posters), videos/PSA, and other projects were displayed for students, faculty, staff, and the public to view.

This year, the ad hoc committee welcomes ALL disciplines to consider a course activity that may give students an opportunity to be creative and share in the support of others or their own survivorship.  Examples could include artwork, demonstration or presentation, photography, messaging or media campaigns, illustration or graphic design projects, essays, poetry, letters to the editor, storytelling, writing victim impact statements, and more.

DMACC’s 2025 NCVRW events can be found by scrolling to the bottom of the Criminal Justice web page under Additional Resources,  with more information forthcoming. DMACC librarians Emma Adams and Christine Whitney are creating a NCVRW LibGuide for curated sources, information, and more, to share with interested faculty, staff, students, and the public.

Please contact  Samantha O’Hara, criminal justice professor at sjohara@dmacc.edu or Kiersten Trost, criminal justice work study student at kltrost@dmacc.edu, with your interest or questions for the Ankeny Showcase, or to get connected with your campus/center NCVRW leader for a showcase near you!

Program will begin with the 2025-26 academic year

  • Kelsey Gillespie has been named the head coach
  • Program will focus on the competitive side of dancing
  • Tryouts will be held in June of 2025

DMACC Director of Athletics B.J. McGinn has announced the addition of a Competitive Dance Team to the school's athletics program. The Dance Team will join men's and women's golf, men's and women's cross country, men's and women's basketball, baseball, softball, volleyball and E Sports as part of the DMACC athletics program.

“The Athletic Department is excited to announce the addition of a Competitive Dance Team for Des Moines Area Community College," McGinn said. “This program will provide opportunities for students to continue their dance competitions after high school and also promote DMACC and the DMACC Bear brand. I am happy to have Kelsey Gillespie on board as our head coach and am excited to get the program started!"

The program will begin in the summer of 2025 with tryouts scheduled for June 21. Kelsey Gillespie has been named the head coach. Gillespie is the owner and director of the Colfax Dance Academy.

DMACC Boone To Host 2025 NJCAA DII Women's Golf Championship

Posted November 14, 2024

Tournament will be played at Cedar Pointe Golf Course in Boone

  • Tournament will be the first national championship hosted by DMACC
  • NJCAA began sponsoring Division I and Division III championships in 2022
  • Cedar Pointe's original nine holes are one of oldest golf courses in Iowa

The National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) has announced that DMACC-Boone Campus will host the first-ever 2025 NJCAA Division II Women's Golf Championship. The tournament will be played May 13 to 16 at Cedar Pointe Golf Course in Boone.

“DMACC, along with its great staff, including President Rob Denson, Director of Athletics B.J. McGinn and Women's Head Golf Coach Chris Seaboch, will partner with the staff at Visit Boone County to provide a championship atmosphere for all involved, including coaches, players and spectators," said McGinn. “Our community is appreciative of the chance to host such a high-class event."

Cedar Pointe is a beautiful and unique golf course. The original nine holes, a classic style golf course with trees lining both sides of most holes, were designed in the early 1900s. The second nine, more links style, was laid out almost 100 years later. Shot shaping is a premium on the front nine that features just two water hazards and seven sand bunkers. Players will see a more open style course when they make the turn with less trees but many more sand bunkers and water hazards. Out-of-bounds makers line many of the holes.

The Cedar Pointe Clubhouse, recently remodeled, features a full bar, multiple wall-mounted TVs and ample seating. The facility's Events Room comfortably seats large crowds and provides accommodations for many gatherings.

“DMACC is excited to host the 2025 NJCAA Division II Women's Golf Championships," McGinn said. “We know the Cedar Pointe course, along with its staff, specifically the Pat Clemons Family and course superintendent Cory Henson, will have the venue in championship condition."

The NJCAA has been sponsoring women's golf since 1976 and began the Division I and Division III championships in 2022.

“We are looking forward to having the inaugural NJCAA Division II Women's Golf Championship this coming spring," said NJCAA Division II Women's Golf Chair Kevin O'Connor." Cedar Pointe Golf Course and the Des Moines Area will provide the teams and individuals with a wonderful venue for this event."

About the show:

Marie is feeling discontent. Her boyfriend’s a dud, her bank statements are piling up and her job at the local dry cleaners feels like a dead end. Oh, and the FBI has just seized her house and assets in their pursuit of her father, a notorious con man on the run for swindling families and businesses out of their money. When Marie is used as bait to lure her father in, she inexplicably finds herself stuck on a road trip with him to acquire the stolen funds. Loosely inspired by the real-life exploits of the playwright’s mother and grandfather, "The Swindlers: A True-ish Tall Tale" is a raucous "memory farce" that explores redemption, reconciliation and the unspoken rewards of surviving time with family.
