Second-ranked Bears improve to 6-0 for the season

The DMACC men's basketball team stayed unbeaten at 6-0 with a pair of wins in the DMACC Classic November 15 and 16 inside the DMACC gymnasium.
Sophomore Jamal Ambrose of Apple Valley, Minn., and freshman Dylan Omweno, also from Apple Valley, Minn., scored 21 points apiece in the Bears' 106-62 win over the Grand View University Junior Varsity (GVUJV) on Nov. 15 and sophomore Da'Shon Fisher of Iowa City had 21 points in an 89-77 win over Black Hawk-Moline Community College (BHMCC) on Nov. 16.
Fisher had 15 points, freshman Jalen Hayes of Milwaukee, Wis., reached double figures with 13 points and sophomore Trevian Carson of Des Moines added 10 points in DMACC's win over GVUJV. The Bears opened the game with a 14-3 run and never looked back in winning their fifth consecutive game. They had a 46-27 lead at halftime and led by as many as 46 points in the second half.
DMACC, ranked second in the most recent Division II poll from the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA), shot 55 percent in the win, making 41 of 75 field goal attempts. The Bears were 11-of-34 from three-point range and 13-of-16 from the free throw line.
Carson's nine rebounds lifted DMACC to a 41-29 advantage on the boards and he also led the Bears in assists with six. Omweno topped DMACC in steals with four.
Carson, Ambrose and freshman Rylan Smith of Lincoln, Neb., joined Fisher in double figures in the win over BHMCC with 17, 15 and 13 points respectively.
The Bears went just more than three minutes without scoring as BHMCC, coached by former DMACC standout Kannon Burrage, scored the game's first seven points before DMACC got on the board. The Bears gained an 11-11 tie with 14 minutes, 19 second to play in the half and took the lead for good at 15-13 on a pair of free throws by Carson with 13:16 left in the half.
DMACC had a seemingly comfortable 53-28 lead at halftime and led as many as 25 points before BHMCC mounted a comeback that saw the Braves close to within seven at 81-74 with 3:34 to play. Omweno rescued the Bears with a three-point basket and Smith added a pair of free throws with 1:41 left for an 86-74 lead and BHMCC never got closer than nine points the rest of the way.
DMACC came away with 48 percent shooting, hitting 30 of 63 field goal attempts. The Bears made six of 25 attempts from beyond the arc and they were 23-of-27 from the free throw line.
Carson recorded his third double-double of the season with 13 rebounds as DMACC won the rebound battle, 45-38. Carson also led the Bears in assists and steals with seven and four respectively.
The DMACC men's basketball team will play Marshalltown Community College (MCC) Nov. 19 inside the DMACC gymnasium. Game time is 6 p.m. MCC, an NJCAA Division I program, brings a 5-1 record into the game.
