Change and the Power of Technology
Today, right now, you have more power at your fingertips than entire generations that came before you. Think about that. That’s what technology really is. It’s possibility. It’s adaptability. It’s capability. But in the end, it’s only a tool. What’s a hammer without a person who swings it? It’s not about what technology can do. It’s about what you can do with it. You’re the voice, and it’s the microphone. When you’re the artist, it’s the paintbrush. We are living in the future we always dreamed of. We have Mixed Reality that changes how we see the world, and AI empowering us to change the world we see. Today, right now, you have more power at your fingertips than entire generations that came before you. So here’s the question: What will you do with it?
Universal Design is the development of products and environments to be usable by all people, to the greatest extent possible, without the need for adaptation or specialized design (Ronald L. Mace, 1941-1998). DMACC is committed to the concept of Universal Design by developing environments and educational experiences that are usable to the greatest extent possible by all persons. Individuals tasked with purchasing, developing and/or using digital and web based content are responsible for considering, selecting, and using accessible products. Des Moines Area Community College (DMACC) is committed to providing accessible websites and accessible online platforms, including Canvas. DMACC staff and faculty work to comply with best practices and standards as defined by Section 508 of the U.S. Rehabilitation Act, level AA of the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) Web Content Accessibility Guidelines 2.0, and the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). The DMACC website pages are assessed through an ongoing process by a W3C compliant validation product, SiteImprove™, to monitor compliance with WCAG guidelines.
Digital and Web based content accessibility standards will apply to DMACC and vendor generated digital and web based content and platforms, including, but not limited to, websites (both DMACC and any licensed websites), learning management systems, course content (publisher and instructor generated and purchased), student information systems, and digital and web based media.
