DMACC Gradebook Expectations
Page Content
These are DMACC's Gradebook Expectations for Canvas, effective Fall 2023.
-
Total column - set to "Display as Percentage" - this is the default setting and should remain as such; it will display the letter grade to you and students (see grading scale below)
-
Weighted grades - make sure the assignment groups and weights match your syllabus (Assignments > Assignment Settings > Assignment Groups Weight)
-
Grading scale - make sure the grading scheme in course Settings matches the scale in your syllabus - the default scale is plus/minus (e.g., 93, 90, 87, etc.) so you may need to change it (see
How do I add a grading scheme in a course?)
-
Due dates – all graded activities have the due date set so students always know when things are due; due dates should match the Course Schedule in the syllabus
-
Accuracy -
- Every graded activity is included (assignment, assessment, participation, etc.)
- No duplicate or extra columns since they can confuse students and affect the overall points possible (particularly if you have a missing or late submission policy); delete any assignments that are not being used
- No grade columns are hidden from students; students should be able to see all graded activities being used for their Total grade
- If using a publisher site for the graded activities, the grade data is pushed back to Canvas
-
Last date of activity - record the last date of academic activity for any student who fails the course in the "Notes" column in Grades (if you don't see the Notes column, click the "Settings" gear icon in the upper-right, switch to the "View Options" tab, select "Notes" in the "Show" list, and then click the "Apply Settings" button; see How do I use the Notes column in the Gradebook?)
-
Save a copy - Export and download the entire gradebook at the end of the term (see
How do I export grades in the Gradebook?)
In Canvas, help guides can be accessed from the "Help" menu and then "Search the Canvas Guides."
