TRIO-SSS offers academic, social, and cultural opportunities for 220 select DMACC students. Students who, participate in TRIO-SSS have higher GPAs, and they are more likely to remain in college and graduate.
- TRIO programs were established by the Federal Government in 1964, as part of the Johnson administration’s War on Poverty.
- Initially there were three programs, which is where we get TRIO.
- Student Support Services became a TRIO program in 1968.
- Today there are seven different TRIO programs on thousands of college campuses across the country.
- The purpose of all TRIO programs continues to be to increase the number of students from historically underserved and underrepresented populations who enroll in and graduate from college.
- DMACC was awarded a TRIO-SSS grant in the late 1980’s.
- DMACC must participate in a grant competition every five years to receive continued funding.
