SUMMARY

Join a wonderful team and work for a family-owned and operated funeral home in business since 1914. A personable self-starter apprentice would work with families arranging and directing funeral services as well as learn and experience a full-service care center. High level of professionalism and integrity required.

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

 

  • Works with families or other authorized person to arrange details such as preparation of obituary notice, selection of urn or casket, determination of location and time of cremation or burial, selection of Pallbearers, procurement of official for religious rites, and transportation of mourners.

     
  • Assists family members with life insurance matters.

 

  • Coordinates flower delivery, transportation, and other related services.

 

  • Plans placement of casket in parlor or chapel and adjusts lights, fixtures, and floral displays.

     
  • Directs Pallbearers in placement and removal of casket from hearse.

     
  • Closes casket and leads funeral cortege to church or burial site.

     
  • Directs preparations and shipment of body for out of state burial.

     
  • Prepares death certificates, permits, embalming reports and purchase contracts.

     
  • Prepares body for interment.

 

  • Complete billing and other paperwork efficiently and in a timely manner.

     
  • Develop a network of professional associates.

     
  • Participates in professional/community organizations.

 

 

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

This job has no supervisory responsibilities.

 

QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

Completion of Mortuary school. Apprentice license in Illinois preferred.

 

LANGUAGE SKILLS

Ability to read, analyze and interpret professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations. Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups, clients, and the public. Bilingual is a plus.

 

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS

Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs.

 

REASONING ABILITY

Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Ability to deal with issues involving variables in standardized situations.

 

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS

Licensed Funeral Director Apprentice in the State of Illinois or willing to be licensed in Illinois.

 

OTHER SKILLS AND ABILITIES

Excellent people skills. Ability to build rapport and trust with clients and staff. Must be a team player with pleasant attitude. Strong organizational skills. Computer skills including Microsoft and CRM. Basic technical skills for operating sound and video equipment.

 

OTHER QUALIFICATIONS

Valid Illinois Drivers License.
