All new regular faculty serve a probationary period, during which intensive evaluation occurs and personnel decisions are made regarding retention or dismissal. Faculty with continuing contracts have a probationary period of three years. This may be extended for a fourth year by mutual agreement. Employees who have successfully completed a prior probationary period with another Iowa community college shall be required to serve only a one-year probationary period. (Board Policy 3019, Probationary Period, and HR 3215, Probationary Period)
Contracted faculty may not engage in secondary employment, which interferes with their ability to perform College employment responsibilities. Secondary employment during the employee's duty hours is specifically prohibited. Furthermore, contracted faculty may not render tutorial services for pay to students enrolled in the College. (Board Policy 3022, Secondary Employment)
Regular faculty should pay close attention to the DMACC academic calendar. A duty day is defined as any working day in which faculty are required by assignment or contract to perform job duties and responsibilities. Thus, for example, full-time regular faculty must be at work during final exam schedules, not just days that they are personally administering final exams. (Board Policy 3016, Duty Days)
The
academic calendar may be found online.
Regular faculty receive health and dental coverage, life insurance, long-term disability insurance, IPERS or TIAA-CREF retirement plans, a maximum of 15 days of sick leave per year, three or four days of personal business leave, and a maximum of 5 days of bereavement leave per year.
Adjunct faculty sign an Appointment Letter each term for their assigned courses. Once the commitment to teach has been made, the instructor has the responsibility to:
- Teach classes at the scheduled times for the full class period.
- Follow the course competencies that are provided by the College.
- Provide students a copy of course syllabus and course competencies.
- Meet with students at their request. Provide the opportunity for students to talk with the instructor outside of the scheduled class. Refer students to other DMACC staff and offices as appropriate.
- Maintain accurate student attendance records.
- Maintain accurate academic records and submit final grades by the posted deadlines.
Adjunct faculty are "at-will" employees whose employment shall be contingent on the need for their services, enrollment, assignment obligations to regular employees, and work performance.
There is no expectation of ongoing employment. Generally, adjunct faculty are not eligible for IPERS or TIAA/CREF retirement plans.
New adjunct instructors teaching credit courses must attend a New Adjunct Instructor Orientation within the first two semesters of teaching, not counting summer term. Adjunct faculty are restricted in the amount of time they may work for the College. An adjunct faculty may not have a load of 8 or more ECH's during both fall and spring terms of an Academic Year.
