Students at Des Moines Area Community College have been very active over the last decade in organizing fun, interesting and educational activities for Earth Day. Contact the Student Activities Council at 515-964-6359 if you are interested in participating in Earth Day activities at DMACC.
History of Earth Day
In 1969 Senator Gaylord Nelson called for a nationwide environmental teach-in as an attempt to marshal the energies of the nation's college students to halt the accelerating pollution and destruction of the environment. Co-organized by Dennis Hayes, the event was called Earth Day. The first Earth Day was held on April 22, 1970. The event continues to be celebrated each year and offers an opportunity to examine new issues and renew one's commitment to environmental protection.
