UnityPoint Health's new Emergency Medicine Residency program is the first of its kind in Central Iowa

WHO

The DMACC Fire Science Technology, Emergency Medical Technician and Paramedic programs will host a dynamic, hands-on “Doc Ops Day" Training event for the inaugural class of Emergency Medicine residents from UnityPoint Health – Des Moines.

WHAT

Emergency department physicians and first responders work together every day to care for patients, often meeting at the doors to the ER when first responders transport a patient to the hospital. Their interactions are brief by necessity and focus on communicating critical information.

So, given their limited time together, how well do physicians understand the role of first responders? The first-year residents in the new Emergency Medicine Residency program at UnityPoint Health – Des Moines will work to answer that question during “Doc Ops" training as they participate in a variety of exercises, including:

  • Jaws of Life extrication

  • Forceable entry door simulation

  • Obstacle course while dressed in full emergency gear

  • Entry into a smoke-filled building and use of a fire hose

  • LifeFlight helicopter extrication/handoff simulation

The “Doc Ops" event will utilize the DMACC Fire Training Facility, which features a customized, three-story fire training tower on the College's Ankeny Campus. The training facility was completed in 2023 and is now being used by DMACC students, as well as by several area fire departments and agencies, to meet official training and education requirements.

WHY:

The new Emergency Medicine Residency program at UnityPoint Health – Des Moines is helping close a geographic training gap as the first Emergency Medicine Residency program in Central Iowa and as one of only two such programs in the state. UnityPoint's three-year program was recently accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) and will accept six residents per year, with the first class beginning this July. The program is designed to help residents heighten their skills of triage and quick decision-marking, with an emphasis on the areas of critical care, EMS and rural medicine.
