High School Equivalency Diploma (HSED Option #2)

DMACC offers a 36 semester credit High School Equivalency Diploma Program for individuals who have not yet earned their high school diploma. Previously earned high school credits may be used to transfer in and be applied toward the 36 semester credit requirement. Upon successful completion, a diploma will be issued at the time of the individual’s regular high school graduation date.

Basic program requirements are:

Age: Individuals should be 16 years and 9 months of age to enroll. Individuals may start at age 16, if they are being served by Iowa’s juvenile institutions, are a Job Corps participant or working with a probation officer.

Documentation: Proof of age is required such as a valid driver’s license, State ID, birth certificate, passport, military ID or other form of government issued ID. Parental or guardian consent is required for students under 18, with the exception of students served in Iowa’s juvenile institutions, Job Corps or working with a probation officer.

Transcripts: Official transcripts from the last high school of attendance are required. For students under the age of 18, a withdraw notice is also required. Transcripts will be evaluated by DMACC’s HSED staff to determine which courses and how many credits remain for the student’s successful completion of the HSED.

HSED Credit Requirements: The High School Equivalency Diploma requires 36 semester credits. This includes 8 semesters of English, 6 semesters of Math, 6 semesters of Science, 6 semesters of Social Studies including American Government and United States History I & II and 10 semesters of Electives. Previously earned high school credits can be applied toward the 36 credit requirement. At least 2 credits must be earned through DMACC. Note: Individuals should be reasonably close to the 36 credit requirement to make this a viable educational option

Learning Environment: Students who pursue the High School Equivalency Diploma Option, will work in individualized, self paced, DMACC learning center environments. DMACC instructors are available for proctoring and assistance.

Course Fees: The charge is $50 per course payable at the time each course is started.

Determination of Credits for DMACC Adult High School Diploma Students

Requirements for Graduation:
DMACC requires that students successfully complete 36 semester credits to qualify for the DMACC Adult High School Diploma.

Eligibility Requirements:
To be eligible for a DMACC Adult Diploma, the student must wait until his/her original high school class has graduated per Iowa Legislation. The student must also complete at least TWO courses through DMACC. These may include college courses which would be counted as half of the college credit earned when applied toward the DMACC Adult Diploma.

The credit requirements for graduation are as follows:

Transcript Evaluations:
When it has been determined that a student wants to enroll in the DMACC Adult High School Diploma Program, they need to submit a transcript to the center in which they wish to attend.

Transcripts can be sent, faxed or delivered to the center in which they wish to attend.

Transcripts should include the following information:

Student's name
School name (if credits are from more than one school, each school name must be indicated)
Course name and credit awarded
School year credits were earned
DMACC credits should be listed as such

Please make sure that transcripts are legible. Handwritten information on transcripts will NOT be accepted.

If there are any unique situations regarding a student's transcript, please attach a note of explanation. This will expedite the evaluation process.

Please note the following transcript exceptions:

We do not award credit for physical education or religion classes
R.O.T.C. credits are calculated at ½ credits.

Enrollments:
The fee for each course is $50. There maybe additional textbook fees depending on the center you have chosen to attend.

Payment is due at the time the students enroll in a course.

Students have four months from the day of enrollment to complete a course.

There will be NO time extensions.

Testing Policies
60% is the minimum acceptable score on any one test in a course. However, an average of 70% or above is necessary for a successful completion. If the student has failed 1/3 of the tests, the course will be failed and no credit given.
